9-1-1 Dispatcher Aids In Child Delivery |
At 8:28 p.m. on January 27, 2009, a 9-1-1 call was received at the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority (MVRDA) in Las Cruces. The call was answered by 9-1-1 Call Taker Robert Milks. Within seconds it was determined that a baby was being born at home on Brazos Drive in Sunland Park.
While Milks spoke with family members, Dispatcher Manuel Chavez sent out alert tones to the Sunland Park Fire Department and American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance, sending them in route to the active child birth call.
Call Taker Milks determined that the baby girl had been delivered; was breathing and crying. Using his Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) training, Call Taker Milks then provided the family members with emergency child birth instructions over the telephone.
Milks explained to the family members how to tie the baby’s umbilical cord, clean around the newborn’s nose and mouth, and to place her on the mother to begin nursing.
Sunland Park Fire Department Engine-1 arrived on the scene seven minutes after the call to 9-1-1 to find the infant and mother doing well. Sunland Park Fire Department firefighters, along with AMR paramedics, assumed care and transported mother and child to Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso.
This was the first child birth delivery call for Call Taker Robert Milks who started working at MVRDA in November 2008.
